Welcome to the June edition of Project LifeSail Campaign newsletter.

Complacency is just another word for pain.
Expect the unexpected. Sure it's a cliché, but given that we’re racing a 24-foot sailboat over 2,100 miles of open ocean it just might be something we want to keep top-of-mind during our training. That's what we've been doing as we keep our eye on our July, 2006 start date.

As our training picks up in time and intensity, we're constantly on the look out for ways to improve what and how we're doing things on the boat. We refuse to become complacent. We're working through our responses to all the "what if" scenarios we can dream up – what if one of us goes overboard while beating upwind? While going downwind? What if our GPS goes out? What if someone gets hurt?

What if, what if, what if...The way we view it, complacency at any time during this campaign could translate into a whole lot of unnecessary pain at a most inconvenient time. And that's something we would really rather avoid.

So as a matter of survival, we're planning on expecting the unexpected. But say you had two full-term pregnancies. Would you expect your third to arrive suddenly and 14 weeks early? Really, who would? But that's what Laura and Dennis Rea faced with the premature birth of their son, Ryan. Their reward – one happy, healthy, energetic kid that now likes to mix it up on the football field, basketball court and baseball diamond. It's an entirely different kind of unexpected. One they gladly embrace.

And that's something we find ourselves embracing and appreciating more every time we step on the boat to continue our efforts in expecting the unexpected.

News for the Month of June
  • Family of the Month: 14 weeks early, weighing in at a mere 1 lb, 9 ounces and measuring only 13 inches – that was unexpected especially after the full-term births of her first two children. Read how Laura & Dennis Rea coped with the unexpected arrival of their son, Ryan.
  • The Race: Finally past boat maintenance, Getting Ready this last month was all about sailing the boat. See what we've been working on and our expected training schedule for the coming month.
  • Blogs: An unexpected boom to the head, that's just one of many things Peter has been trying to avoid during shake-down sails this last month. Read about that and more in his latest blog. Unexpected big wind at the J-24 Nationals had Jeff smiling ear-to-ear last month. And that experience is translating into a safer boat, safer campaign on the Moore 24. Read about it in his latest blog.
